RESUMEN

Background and Aim: To develop species-specific probiotics for poultry, it is ideal to obtain these probiotic microorganisms directly from the intestinal tract of broiler and egg-laying chicks in production environments to ensure adaptation to actual conditions. This study aimed to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from the intestinal tract of broiler and egg-laying chicks to determine their probiotic potential. Materials and Methods: Twenty-five Ross-308 broilers and 25 Isa Brown egg-laying chicks were raised until days 42 and 120, respectively; they were housed in an individual poultry building. Lactic acid bacteria were isolated and identified from the small intestine mucus of broiler and layer chicks and then evaluated based on resistance to acidic pH levels, bile salt concentration, and antagonistic activity against wild strains of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. selected strains with probiotic potential were identified by polymerase chain reaction and confirmed by rDNA sequencing. Results: One hundred and fifty Gram-positive isolates were obtained; 28% (42) were catalase and oxidase negative and biochemical identification was made by crystal system: 76.2% (32) Enterococcus spp., 16.6% (7) Lactococcus spp., and 7.2% (3) Streptococcus spp.; and evaluated for hemolysin production; tolerance to low pH and bile salts, and antagonistic potential were carried out. Molecular characterization yielded 56% (24) Enterococcus faecium, and 44% (18) Enterococcus faecalis. About 81% (34) of strains were without vancomycin resistance genes criterion. Conclusion: This study isolated and characterized 36 strains of LAB with probiotic qualities, from the intestines of broiler and egg-laying chicks, selecting E. faecium, Enterococcus avium, and Enterococcus casseliflavus, Lactococcus garviae as promising strains for further in vitro and in vivo research.

AIM: The research was conducted to determine the seroprevalence and risk factor associated with respiratory viral pathogens in dual-purpose cattle of Aguachica, Rio de Oro and La Gloria municipalities in Cesar department, Colombia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The seroprevalence study was done from the random sampling (n=1000) of blood collected from 29 dual-purpose herds, located in three municipalities (Aguachica, Rio de Oro, and La Gloria) of Cesar department. The presence of antibodies against bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), and bovine parainfluenza-3 virus (BPI-3V) in the samples was detected by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Epidemiological data were obtained using a questionnaire administered to the owner or manager of each herd. RESULTS: The overall highest seroprevalence was observed for BHV-1 (94.7%), followed by BRSV (98.6%), BVDV (35.2%), and BPI-3V (47.1%). Regarding the seroprevalence by municipalities, there was a statistical association (p<0.05) for BVDV; however, for BRSV, BHV-1, and BPI-3V, no statistical association was found (p>0.05) between seropositive values and the municipalities, indicating that animal was seropositive in similar proportions in the three municipalities. Female sex and older animals (>24 months) were a significant risk factor for BHV-1 and BPI-3V infection. Regarding the clinical signs, there was a statistical association (p<0.05) between the seropositive values of BVDV and most of clinical signs observed, except for abortion. CONCLUSION: This research confirms the high seroprevalence of the respiratory viral pathogens in nonvaccinated cattle within the study areas. Therefore, appropriate sanitary management practices and routine vaccination programs should be adopted to reduce the seroprevalence of these infectious agents.

Gastrointestinal parasites are one of the most important health problems in cattle worldwide, as they cause economic losses in the herds. Twenty - seven double purpose herds were visited to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in cattle at the Rio de Oro and Aguachica municipalities. Overall, 862 fecal samples were collected in three age groups: <12months, 12-24months and >24months. Stool samples were taken directly from the rectum and refrigerated until processing. For parasite determination, fecal samples were processed using coprological techniques. The parasitic genera were identified by egg or infective larval morphology. The global prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was 83.2%, being the highest values for Eimeria sp. (77.9%), Strongyloides sp. (10.8%) and Haemonchus sp. (8.5%). Regarding the prevalence by municipalities, there was no statistical association (P>0.05) indicating that the prevalence was similar in the two municipalities. Regarding the results for Eimeria sp., different degrees of positivity were observed, reflecting that there was statistical association (P<0.05) with respect to the age group, suggesting that adult animals may act as infection source for calves. Likewise, there was statistical association (P<0.05) between the prevalence for Strongyloides sp., Haemonchus sp. and Trichostrongylus sp. with respect to the age group. It is concluded that there is a high prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in dual-purpose cattle in the municipalities under study, and that it could be controlled by improving the hygienic conditions of the herds, and informing the farmer about parasite control programs.

Los lodos contaminados con residuos de aceites lubricantes usados generan gran impacto ambiental negativo al no ser manejados adecuadamente. Se propuso la biorremediación para disminuir la concentración de dichos contaminantes. Los ensayos fueron realizados en las instalaciones de la planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales (PTAR) de Río Frío (Girón, Santander, Colombia), donde se evaluaron consorcios microbianos nativos, que posteriormente se adicionaron a las biopilas conformadas por lodos deshidratados provenientes del tratamiento primario de aguas residuales domésticas (usados como fuente de materia orgánica), lodos provenientes de lavaderos de carros y lodos de alcantarillado de la zona industrial de la ciudad de Bucaramanga (Colombia). Se aislaron, identificaron y conservaron cepas microbianas con capacidad degradadora de hidrocarburos totales de petróleo (TPH) como Pseudomonas spp., Acinetobacter spp, Enterobacter cloacae, Citrobacter spp., Bacillus brevis, Micrococcus spp y Nocardia spp. Se hizo una serie de pruebas piloto donde se inoculó cada montaje con un consorcio bacteriano a una concentración de 3x108 UFC/ml de bacterias y microorganismos fúngicos como Aspergillus spp., Fusarium spp., Trichoderma spp., a una concentración de 1x106 esporas/ml; se monitorearon parámetros de temperatura, pH, humedad y oxigenación. Se realizaron dos ensayos para verificar el comportamiento de dichos tratamientos; se analizó la variable continua TPH en ppm mediante el método de modelos mixtos lineares en bloques aleatorios completos, que revelaron diferencias significativas entre la biopila control y las biopilas bajo prueba; se obtuvieron porcentajes de remoción hasta de 94% de TPH en 120 días y 84% en 40 días, lo que reflejó un efecto positivo en la utilización de los consorcios de microorganismos bajo prueba en la descontaminación de lodos de alcantarillado industrial y lodos de lavaderos de carros.


The sludge contaminated with residues of used lubricating oils produce large negative environmental impact by not being handled properly. We proposed Biorremediation to decreasethe concentration of these polltants. The trials were conducted on the waste water treatment plant (WWTP) Río Frío (Girón, Santander, Colombia) ,we evaluate native microbial associations, and subsequently they were added to biopiles, made up of dried sludge the waste water treatment (source of organic mater) sludge from washing cars and sewage sludge from the industrial area of the city Bucaramanga (Colombia). Several pilot test were completed and we isolated, identified and retained microbial atrains with ability to degrading total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) such as Pseudomonas spp., Escherichia coli, Citrobacter spp., Bacillus brevis, Micrococcus spp., among others. We inoculated each pilot assembly with a bacterial concentration of 3x108 UFC/ml and fungal microorganisms like Aspergillus spp., Fusarium spp., Trichoderma spp. in a concentration of 1x106 Spores/ml. Parameters such as temperature, pH, humidity, oxygenation were monitoring frequently. Two trials were completed to verify the behabior and results of treatment, we analized continuously the concentration of TPH using linear mixed models approach in a randomized complete blocks, which revealed significant differences between control biopile (without microorganism consortia) and biopiles under test, obtaining removal percentages to 94% of TPH in 120 days, and 84% in 40 days, reflecting a positive effect on the use of consortia of microorganisms under test in the decontamination of domestic sewage sludge and industrial sludge and sludge the car wash.
